can I grow phalaenopsis outdoors?

I'm a newbie when it comes to growing orchids. I have several phalaenopsis orchids and after reading your newsletter I want to put them outside for the summer. I have read other places that you shouldn't put these types of orchids outdoors? What do you think?

Answer

You can grow terrific phalaenopsis outdoors - but they'll need to be protected from the sun, wind, and rain. Phals are considered "low light" orchids and they will burn quickly in any direct sun outdoors. They also need to dry out between waterings so they also need to be protected from the rain.
If you have a porch or balcony that will shelter your plants from the sun and the rain they'll be fine. Also, phals don't like the cold so bring them in as soon as temperatures drop into the 50's this fall.
We have a mini-greenhouse that would be perfect for growing phalaenopsis outdoors (lots of other orchid types too!). With our mini-greenhouse your plants can enjoy all the benefits of being outdoors and while protected from the elements. Take a look at Mini-Greenhouse for Outdoor Growing in our store.
